Uday Thakkar, managing director of Red Ochre, was presented with the coveted New Statesman/Edge Upstarts Social Enterprise Mentor of the year award by Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, at a ceremony in central London on the evening of Wednesday 18th June 2008.

Uday won the award because in the judges' opinion "His knowledge and enthusiasm inspire a large number of social entrepreneurs to realise their potential and to succeed. All of those who nominated him talked of his positive impact not only on their business but also their confidence and self-esteem. The judges recognised his dedication and determination to go the extra mile, and the impact he has made".

Uday commented "Red Ochre has supported and promoted social enterprise for many years. It is great that these awards showcase the important work of social entrepreneurs. It has been a delight and a privilege to work with passionate and innovative people who are delivering social and financial returns. It is vital that the huge talent within the sector continues to be recognised and be given the foundation it needs to continue delivering tangible change into the future".
